Fifteen years of bringing native timber back to life

Native Grain Co. exists to preserve exceptional New Zealand furniture and prepare it for the homes of today. Solid rimu and swamp kauri furniture, the kind that used to cost thousands when it was new, has too often been discarded or forgotten simply because a finish had dulled or a hinge had worn out.

Pieces come to us from open homes, estate clearances, downsizing sales, and private collections across New Zealand. Solid native timber falls out of fashion every few years, and it's often the furniture first passed over in favour of whatever's trending in the flat-pack stores, even though the timber itself has only become more valuable with time. We look for what's worth preserving: strong construction, distinctive grain, and often the mark of a recognised New Zealand maker.

For over fifteen years our team has selected these pieces, structurally repaired them, and refinished them by hand until they're ready for another few decades of use. The timber itself was never the problem, native rimu and swamp kauri only get more beautiful with age. It just needed someone willing to put the work in.

Today we pass every restored piece on without retail overhead or a middleman markup, priced for what it is: a well-made, one-of-a-kind piece of New Zealand furniture history.

That same respect for native timber is why every piece we sell today plants a new one. Rimu, kauri, and their relatives take centuries to grow, so restoring old furniture keeps that timber in use for decades longer, and for every piece sold we plant one native tree through our native tree planting initiative, in a species you choose.
