Why Native Grain

Rescued

Sourced from New Zealand homes, estates, downsizing sales and private collections.

Restored

Structurally repaired and professionally refinished in our Auckland workshop.

Reimagined

Carefully presented and, where appropriate, reupholstered or updated for modern New Zealand interiors.

Replanted

One native tree funded for every furniture piece sold.

Selected, not mass sourced

We do not restore everything we find. We select furniture for its timber, construction, provenance and potential to serve another generation.

  • /Solid native or quality timber
  • /Strong construction
  • /Recognised New Zealand design or maker
  • /Distinctive grain or history
  • /Worth preserving for its next home
An example of the restoration process, from as-found condition to a finished, refinished piece.

From as-found to finished

Every piece starts life in its as-found condition, aged finish, worn hardware, joints that have loosened over the decades. Once ordered, it's structurally repaired and refinished by hand in our Auckland workshop until it's ready for another few decades in a modern home.

New Zealand makers

Many of the pieces we restore were built decades ago by New Zealand's own furniture makers, in solid native timber, to a standard rarely made new today. Restoring them keeps a part of that history in use.

Sorenmobler

Solid rimu dining and living furniture, built to last generations.

Danske Mobler

One of New Zealand's most recognised native-timber furniture makers.

Rose & Heather

Known for swamp kauri pieces, including timber carbon-dated tens of thousands of years old.

Aiku

Modern New Zealand design in solid native timber, no longer in production.

Millbrook

New Zealand-made furniture in solid native timbers.

Willetts

New Zealand-made furniture in solid native timbers.

Woodpeckers

New Zealand-made furniture in solid native timbers.

Native Grain Co. is not affiliated with or endorsed by these manufacturers. We restore and resell pieces originally made by them, preserving a part of New Zealand's furniture-making history.

More about New Zealand makers

The restoration standard

Every piece goes through the same process before it's confirmed ready for dispatch.

  1. 1

    Structural inspection

Every piece is assessed for structural soundness before any work begins.

  2. 2

    Joint and component repairs

Loose joints, veneer, and worn components are repaired to their original standard.

  3. 3

    Preparation and refinishing

Surfaces are stripped back and prepared for a factory-standard finish.

  4. 4

    Hardware replacement where required

Handles, runners, and fittings are replaced only where genuinely worn.

  5. 5

    Professional protective finish

A durable Mirotone lacquer finish, matched to the timber's original tone.

  6. 6

    Final quality inspection

Every piece is checked over before it's confirmed ready for dispatch.

  7. 7

    One-year workmanship warranty

Every restoration is backed by a full year's warranty on workmanship and finish.
